    Hey everyone,

Football is all about skill, creativity, and those moments of individual brilliance that get us off our seats. But did you know that some audacious and even iconic skills have actually been banned from the beautiful game? It sounds wild, but it’s true! Rules evolve to ensure fair play, safety, and sportsmanship, and sometimes, that means saying goodbye to certain tricks.

Let’s dive into some of the football skills that are no longer allowed on the professional pitch, and why:

    1. The Shirt Catch (or Shirt Grab)
What it is: This involves a player lifting their shirt to catch the ball, often to gain control or prevent it from going out of bounds.

Why it’s banned: It’s considered a form of handball. Although the player isn’t directly using their hands, the shirt is an extension of their body and using it to manipulate the ball gives an unfair advantage. It also just looks a bit silly and isn’t in the spirit of foot-based play.

    2. The Donkey Kick Free-Kick
What it is: This refers to a highly unusual free-kick technique where a player kicks the ball by lifting a leg over it and striking it with the heel, or in a very unorthodox, non-traditional manner.

Why it’s banned: While specific instances might vary, such theatrical or unconventional kicks can be deemed unsporting conduct or attempts to deceive in a manner that falls outside the boundaries of fair play. It could also lead to unpredictable or potentially dangerous situations.

    3. Running Knee Lock / Head Stall / Neck Stall / Seal Dribble
What they are: These skills involve a player balancing the ball on their head, neck, or knee and running with it, essentially “carrying” the ball rather than dribbling it with their feet. The “seal dribble,” famously used by some players (like Kerlon), involves bouncing the ball on the head continuously while moving.

Why they’re banned: These moves are typically classified as obstruction or dangerous play. By balancing the ball in such a way, a player makes it almost impossible for an opponent to legally challenge for the ball without committing a foul or risking injury. It also prevents the flow of the game and isn’t considered a legitimate dribbling technique.

    4. The Knee Grab
What it is: This is a less common skill where a player might use their knee in an unusual way to control or shield the ball, almost “grabbing” it with their leg.

Why it’s banned: Like the shirt catch, it often falls under obstruction rules, making it difficult for opponents to fairly challenge for the ball.

    5. The “Paradinha” Penalty Kick Feint
What it is: “Paradinha” is a Portuguese term meaning “little stop.” In a penalty kick, it’s a feint where the player pauses or almost stops during their run-up just before striking the ball, intending to trick the goalkeeper into moving early.

Why it’s banned: While feinting before the run-up is allowed, stopping during the run-up is now prohibited. FIFA banned this specific type of feint to reduce unfair deception and maintain the integrity of the penalty kick. It was seen as an excessive attempt to manipulate the goalkeeper.

    6. Low Headers (in some contexts)
What it is: While heading is fundamental, certain aggressive, low headers, especially those that involve leading with the head into a dangerous area or challenge, can be penalized.

Why it’s banned/penalized: This usually relates to player safety. Rules are constantly updated to minimize head injuries and dangerous play, so any action (even a header) that puts players at undue risk can lead to a foul.

It’s fascinating to see how the game evolves and how what was once a “skill” can become a “foul.” These bans highlight the constant effort to balance individual brilliance with fairness, safety, and the spirit of the game.

What are your thoughts on these banned skills? Do you remember any other moves that got outlawed? Let’s discuss!
