A 36-year-old Nigerian national, Emmanuel Okafor Chukwuma, has been apprehended following an attack on a Mobile Money vendor in Avenor, Accra. Chukwuma, who is reportedly an illegal miner (“galamsey operator”), was caught after a failed attempt to escape.
The incident took place on Sunday, June 30, 2025, around 8:30 p.m. Police investigations reveal that Chukwuma and an accomplice, known only as Emeka, arrived on an unregistered motorbike. They attacked the vendor at gunpoint, demanding cash. During the robbery, Chukwuma allegedly fired three warning shots, with one bullet striking the victim in her left leg. Fearing for her life, she handed over a bag containing GHS 20,000.
Shortly after the robbery, a courageous bystander initiated a pursuit and raised an alarm, prompting other members of the public to join the chase. This led to the suspects crashing their motorbike, resulting in Chukwuma’s immediate arrest. His accomplice, Emeka, however, managed to flee the scene.
During interrogation, Chukwuma confessed to the crime, stating that he and Emeka had planned to escape to Nigeria after the robbery, having already secured travel tickets. He has since been charged and remanded into police custody, with a court reappearance scheduled for July 30, 2025.
The police confirmed that the victim’s stolen bag, which contained GHS 9,000 at the time of recovery, has been returned to her.
The Accra Regional Police Command has highly commended the bravery and swift action of the public in assisting with the arrest. They also assure the public of ongoing efforts to apprehend Emeka and encourage continued support in reporting suspicious activities.
