The Kaduna State Police Command is investigating a political meeting reportedly organized by former governor Nasir El-Rufai, which led to violence and gunfire. The meeting, which was a coalition gathering for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), was allegedly attacked by government-backed thugs.
According to a statement by DSP Mansir Hassan, the police’s preliminary findings suggest that “political gangsters and thugs attached to the former Governor” were involved in the shooting. The police noted that the organizers held the meeting despite repeated warnings.
The ADC party officials have denied any knowledge of the meeting and have distanced themselves from it. The police have suspended all unauthorized political gatherings in the state until proper security measures can be implemented. The command has also warned that any venue, such as a hotel or event center, that hosts a political gathering without notifying security agencies will be held accountable.
