Ashleigh Plumptre, a defender for the Super Falcons and originally from England, has recounted an experience where some of her teammates expressed skepticism regarding her Nigerian heritage upon her arrival to the national team, as reported by Daily Post.

Plumptre, originally from Leicester, England, had participated in more than 25 matches for England’s youth teams prior to his decision to represent Nigeria.

She initially held a provisional connection to England but subsequently sought to alter her nationality. Following the approval of her request by FIFA, she has formally transitioned her allegiance to Nigeria.

Her eligibility to represent the Super Falcons stems from her paternal grandfather, and since she has not participated in a competitive match for England’s senior team, this facilitated her transition.

In July 2021, Plumptre had the opportunity to join the Nigerian team for the first time during an eight-day training camp in Vosendorf, Austria, as part of the preparations for the Aisha Buhari Cup.

During her appearance on Lagos Talks 91.3, Plumptre reflected on the responses of her new teammates upon her arrival. “I had the opportunity to attend my first camp in 2021, held in Austria.” She remarked that it resembled a more amicable gathering.

“Initially, there was a degree of uncertainty regarding what I would bring to the table.” It appears that this situation may have been somewhat atypical for them. They inquired, “Could you share how you identify as Nigerian?”

She remarked with a light-hearted chuckle, “Typically, when I receive that inquiry, I simply share a picture of my father, and they respond with, ‘Oh, I see.’”

Currently participating in the Saudi Pro League, Plumptre has emerged as an important member of the Super Falcons team.
