The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has appealed to the Nigerian government to fully integrate Shari’ah courts into the country’s judicial system. The group, led by Professor Ishaq Akintola, argues that the current system is lopsided and discriminatory because Shari’ah courts are only established in the North, while common law courts, which originated from Christianity, are available nationwide.
According to MURIC, this setup denies access to justice for Muslims in the southern part of the country. Akintola highlights that while Muslims tolerate common law courts, Christians have not shown the same accommodation for Shari’ah courts in the South.
The group contends that the government should address this imbalance by treating Shari’ah courts as federal courts and establishing them in every state, similar to the establishment of federal high courts. MURIC warns that this issue could lead to Muslims questioning the acceptance of common law courts in the North if Shari’ah courts are not permitted in the South. The group insists that this action is necessary for fairness, justice, and inclusivity, as the Nigerian constitution recognizes a tripartite judicial system.
