The Nigerian Labour Congress has pushed for a new minimum wage of N154,000, citing worsening economic hardship and the declining purchasing power of Nigerian workers.

The demand was contained in a letter by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), an arm of the Nigerian Labour Congress.

The letter, signed by Benjamin Anthony and Olowoyo Gbenga, stressed the “urgent necessity for an upward review of salaries and allowances” in the public service.

According to the council, the current wage structure no longer reflects economic realities, as rising inflation, food prices and transport costs continue to put pressure on workers.

They pointed out that the proposed N154,000 minimum wage is aimed at restoring a decent standard of living, urging the Federal Government to commence immediate negotiations.

The demand comes amid growing concerns over the cost-of-living crisis in Nigeria, with many households struggling to meet basic needs.
