All 49 people aboard an Antonov An-24 that crashed in Russia’s Far East on Thursday died, officials said. The Angara Airlines flight, traveling from Khabarovsk to Tynda with a stop in Blagoveshchensk, lost contact near Tynda without sending a distress signal.
Rescuers found the burned wreckage about 16 km (10 miles) from Tynda in a remote, mountainous area. The crash site was inaccessible by helicopter, and a fire was still burning.
The Soviet-era plane, over 50 years old, had a valid airworthiness certificate until 2036. Authorities opened a criminal probe into possible air safety violations.
